Ever since I got a gig doing reviews for a corporate website, I've been branching out in terms of the music and artists I'm checking out. They'll pretty much send me anything I ask for provided it's on their "list" of what needs to be covered, and that list usually coincides with whatever's just debuted on the Billboard Top 200. Some of the shit's been good, some has been bad, some has been ugly and some has been outright weird.
Less Than Jake - I dig it. They might be even more pop than Green Day is these days but the sax and trombone in the band really work for me.
Emmure - hated it. Thought this might be good since they did a song for TNA but that alone should have been my warning. Loud angry fucks with no singing ability and not much more as musicians.
Fall Out Boy - ehh, they're okay. I get a laugh out of their absurdly long song titles and how some of them purposefully fuck with the lawyers at their record label. Good pop band, but I'd probably only continue to like them in small doses.
Black Tide - these guys are great. Old school heavy metal from a bunch of kids so young they probably weren't even born when Skid Row and G'n'R were topping the charts, yet somehow they get it right. Slamming album start to finish.
Chante Moore - very classy lady. Probably a little TOO classy for today's era of raunchy R&B. There's something sexy about that refined elegance though, something intangible and appealing, that makes you fall for her quiet storm charm.
36 Crazyfists - undecided. They've got some songs that show potential to be great metal or power rock, then they've got some songs that clearly weren't thought through thoroughly and just ended up being a sonic mishmash of nonsense.
Dokken - wow, I didn't even know these guys were still around. Actually that's not entirely true, only half of the original band is still around, but Don Dokken can still sing his ass off. Could also fall into that "old school metal sound" category nicely.
