Do any of you young whipper-snappers these days listen to this great music?

I do. What's your favourite one. I've been listening to a lot of Hard-Bop lately (Lee Morgan, Horace Silver, Sonny Rollins) it's music with great melodies and great bluesy improvising. Over all, Art Tatum is probably my favorite because of how consistently fantastic he is. He really only does one kind of jazz, but he is always flawless and creative at it. Coltrane is great, Mingus, Miles Davis of course, Wes Montgomery, Herbie Hancock rules, Bill Evans is fantastic, Charlie Parker, Wayne Shorter Bud Powell, Dexter Gordan is underrated.

No Offense but I can not stand Jazz. Actually, that's not true, I just gets zero emotional response. Jazz to me is music that was made to ignore.

I used to not like it. Then I did. I don't know what happened. I hope I didn't mature.
Anyway I like Herbie Hancock, Coltrane, Miles, Mingus, Art Blakey, Bill Evans, some others probably.

Jazz is one of the most difficult musics to appreciate. You literally have to train yourself to like it. There's so much going on at once in the best stuff, that you basically have to be trained to understand what you're listening too. If I had to teach a Jazz 101 class I would start everyone out with this: Dave Brubeck is the most accessible jazz musician on the planet. His music is actually intended to elicit a non-emotional response from the listener (it's called Cool Jazz.) Holy shit I can put youtube videos on here? State-of-the-art boarding.

The thing is, you also have to have a desire to learn, and a lot of people, including myself don't.

I love Coltrane's Blue Train and A Love Supreme. Miles Davis' Kind Of Blue and Bitches Brew work for me too...
If Cab Calloway counts... I'm all about that man too. But I think he's usually considered Big Band... so, whatever.

I tried to get into listening to Jazz a couple of years ago, but it didn't take. I figure I might give it another shot when I'm like 30-something and Lil Wayne has been deemed "Best Rapper Ever" in a televised ceremony in 2014.
Ironically I find it easier to listen to a lot of old school funk from the 70s

Jazz to me is like a friend who calls you up to reminisce about old times, who you might not hear from for years again afterwards, but you're still cool. I don't go out of my way to fuck with jazz but when I hear a good jazz record I'm not hating, and of course any hip-hop artists that know the GOOD records to sample (like Primo and Pete Rock) get props.

I fuckin love jazz, and even went to college for music where jazz was heavily emphasized for a year back in the day. However, its not music I would listen to everyday just for the hell of it. Its something I need to be in the mood for. However, jazz live is a whole different experience as I try to catch some good live jazz a few times a year. Jazz can also be good music to put on with a lady if you're going for the 'i'm smart and sophisticated' route to seal the deal.
PS-the drummer in that Brubeck video was doing some wicked shit during his solo, I'm jeleous!
